BIOGAS TREATMENT

Biomethane: A diverse and renewable energy source

It is ready for use at any time and around the clock, has many applications and is produced in a resource-efficient manner: Biomethane is an important component of today’s and tomorrow’s energy supply. This makes a significant contribution to the energy transition.

The biggest advantages of biomethane: It is renewable, can be fed into the public natural gas grid and is suitable for decentralised energy supply. Processing and feeding into the natural gas grid significantly increase the degree of utilisation of biogas – and thus increases the overall efficiency of your biogas plant at the same time. This applies to both new construction and RePowering projects.

There is also great potential in the heating market, where biomethane can be used as a renewable and affordable energy source. The fuel market is just as promising, as the proportion of “green” natural gas in refuelling in Germany already amounts to 20 percent. Natural gas-based fuels from biomethane are gaseous bio-CNG, which is mostly used for cars, vans and public transport, as well as liquid bio-LNG, which is mainly used in long-distance heavy-duty transport.

Another advantage is that the CO2 generated during the production of biomethane can be liquefied and further used in highly purified applications, for example in beverage and food production, in the chemical industry or in greenhouses.

In this way, biomethane enables a climate-neutral energy supply, which is available flexibly at any time, especially in the dunkelflauten, and above all year-round – in the areas of electricity, heat and mobility.

KNOWLEDGE

What is Biomethane?

Biomethane is processed biogas, which consists of 50 to 60 percent methane. The rest is made up of CO2 and minor accompanying gases. The processing of biogas into biomethane is carried out by separating the non-combustible gases.

Biogas treatment

Our technologies

In order to process biogas into natural gas quality, we rely on selected and proven processes, which we install turnkey at your premises.

Membrane technology

PlanET offers the membrane process in Europe. The reliable biogas treatment process relies on the principle of selective permeation. For this purpose, we use the highly efficient SEPURAN® Green gas separation modules developed by Evonik Industries. The process guarantees you state-of-the-art technology: Without using heat and chemicals, the process can be used in all performance classes – with relatively low investment costs and short installation times.

Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system

The pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology uses the principle of gas separation at ambient temperature on a carbon molecular sieve (CMS). The special material adsorbs the carbon dioxide from the raw gas to produce purified biomethane.

FAQ

Our answers to your questions

Biomethane is traded as a substitute for natural gas.

Biomethane can be used without hesitation wherever natural gas is used. This includes combined heat and power production (CHP), direct heat generation, use as fuel, and also as material in the chemical industry.

No, it can also be sold at petrol/filling stations.

It is used both physically and chemically as a carrier.

CO2 is used, among other things, as a fertilizer in plant breeding, as a fire extinguishing or refrigerant agent, or as a raw material in the chemical industry.
